Why I Started Making my own Deodorant
I've been trying various natural deodorants for years. I spent lots of money on natural and organic deodorant from health food stores that didn't work and cost a lot. Before I began making my own deodorant, I had really given up on ever finding something that worked for me that didn't have harmful ingredients.
What's the big deal? Why is it so important to use natural deodorant with ingredients that you can actually read without using a web search to find out what they are? Here are some of the main reasons why I decided to go organic in my deodorant.
1. Antiperspirant contains aluminum - Aluminum has been known by lots of medical research to cause both cancer (especially breast cancer in both men and women...weird, huh?) but other things like Alzheimer's. The aluminum mimics estrogen and high estrogen in women and men causes a high risk of cancer. Aluminum has also been known to effect kidney function. For more information and research here is a great article: http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2011/10/17/aluminum-containing-antiperspirants-contribute-breast-cancer.aspx#!
2. Most deodorants contain allergenic and harmful parabens - Parabens (Methylparaben, propylparaben, butylparaben, or benzylparaben) are found in most deodorants today, even some natural deodorants. There is a lot of research which shows that most cancer patients have a high level of parabens in their body. Parabens also cause many allergy reactions in people. Here is some more information on parabens and cancer: http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2012/04/02/toxic-parabens-on-breast-cancer-patients.aspx http://www.breastcancerfund.org/clear-science/chemicals-glossary/parabens.html
There is lots of other harmful chemicals in most commercial deodorants, even those that are not antiperspirants. Even the scents in the deodorants have harmful, allergenic ingredients. Even some natural deodorants sneak in harmful or allergenic ingredients. This is why I chose to make my own deodorant.
The evolution of my deodorant lasted a couple years. It started out with a few soupy, simple concoction of coconut oil, arrowroot powder, and baking soda. For quite some time, my homemade deodorant was sub-par and had a tendency to melt in our Oklahoma heat. Today, the deodorant I made for Farm Girl Organics has almost the consistency of store bought deodorant and smells good too!
All the ingredients in my deodorant are mild and safe for the skin. In fact, the coconut oil and the lemon grass essential oils in my deodorant are beneficial in many ways for the skin!
Coconut oil is anti-fungal, anti-microbial and anti-bacterial so it works to kill the stink! :-) It also is anti-carcinogenic, so it actually has opposite effects of commercial, cancer-causing deodorants!
Lemongrass Essential Oil is anti-microbial, anti-fungal, anti-bacterial, and a natural deodorizer!
